"O-RAN has leveraged significant specification work done in xRAN and will accelerate interoperability testing and product commercialisation," claims co-chair Professor Sachin Katti. "Further, the O-RAN fronthaul workgroup has also started discussions on potential new study items to pursue for 2019."
"It is CPRI that handles the connections between the signal-processing equipment (called baseband, in the industry) and the radios in what operators call the 'fronthaul' part of the network," Explains Iain Morris. "But there are so many variables with any CPRI implementation that operators are forced to work in one vendor's system. It is effectively a proprietary tool."
While the LimeSDR family are typically paired with amplifiers, Robinson's efforts clearly show what can be achieved with a barefoot implementation, and set a high bar for those BATC members looking to follow him in the LimeSDR Challenge.
"For applications requiring low latency, sending huge quantities of data to and from the centralised cloud is no longer practical," explains Verizon's Adam Koeppe. "Data processing and management will need to take place much closer to the user."
