"O-RAN has leveraged significant specification work done in xRAN and will accelerate interoperability testing and product commercialisation," claims co-chair Professor Sachin Katti. "Further, the O-RAN fronthaul workgroup has also started discussions on potential new study items to pursue for 2019."
"It is CPRI that handles the connections between the signal-processing equipment (called baseband, in the industry) and the radios in what operators call the 'fronthaul' part of the network," Explains Iain Morris. "But there are so many variables with any CPRI implementation that operators are forced to work in one vendor's system. It is effectively a proprietary tool."
While the LimeSDR family are typically paired with amplifiers, Robinson's efforts clearly show what can be achieved with a barefoot implementation, and set a high bar for those BATC members looking to follow him in the LimeSDR Challenge.
"For applications requiring low latency, sending huge quantities of data to and from the centralised cloud is no longer practical," explains Verizon's Adam Koeppe. "Data processing and management will need to take place much closer to the user."
Additional improvements in the SDR Console software include pseudo-stereo support, extended downconverter and frequency display support, new "slower" and "very slow" modes for the signal history view, and bug fixes.
"Open Research Institute and Phase 4 Ground are honoured to be given the chance to put advanced software defined radio hardware like the LimeSDR Mini into the hands of active developers across the world," says ORI's Michelle Thompson of the hardware grant.
Free and open source package includes LTE Release 8 support, selected LTE Release 9 features, and full compatibility with Lime Microsystems' LimeSDR family of open software defined radio (SDR) hardware.
"Those new tagged/released versions contain half a year of work since the previous versions released during summer 2018," explains project maintainer Harald Welte. "The primary focus was on bug-fixing and stabilisation as well as some major new features, such as inter-BSC-handover support in osmo-bsc."
"We share a software-defined vision with Canonical," explains Lime Micro's Ebrahim Bushehri. "Ubuntu Core, snaps, and IoT app stores create a secure, open-source platform that enables our partners to develop and deploy new disruptive technologies quickly."
