Telecom Infra Project Details MWC 2019 E2E Network Demo, Launches New Project Groups

"For the first time, TIP is showing how its technologies fit together across a telecom network," explains executive director Attilio Zani. "Together, this suite of solutions utilises a software-centric, vendor-neutral approach that highlights the value of disaggregation and the power of interoperability for more agile, cost-efficient networks."

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is celebrating its third year during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, and on top of a range of demonstrations has announced it is launching two new project groups: OpenRAN 5G NR and WiFi.

Formally launched at MWC 2016, the Telecom Infra Project aims to accelerate innovation in the field of telecommunications through collaborative engineering-led development and today boasts more than 500 members. A selection of those members can be found on the Telecom Infra Project stand during MWC 2019 at Hall 2.1 Stand 2.1B27Ex, where they are demonstrating an end-to-end TIP-powered network which includes OpenRAN, vRAN Fronthaul, Edge Computing and Applications, Disaggregated Cell-Site Gateway (DCSG), and OpenCellular projects, alongside Lime Microsystems’ LimeNET CrowdCell – all communicating and operating together.

“Many of these TIP technologies were first proven and tested in TIP Community Labs around the world, achieving important milestones on the way to production deployment,” explains TIP executive director Attilio Zani. “Now, for the first time, TIP is showing how its technologies fit together across a telecom network. Together, this suite of solutions utilises a software-centric, vendor-neutral approach that highlights the value of disaggregation and the power of interoperability for more agile, cost-efficient networks.”

At the same time, TIP has announced a pair of new project groups: OpenRAN 5G NR, co-chaired by Vodafone and Sprint with a focus on reaffirming a roadmap towards next-generation white-box disaggregated radio access network solutions designed for improved flexibility and interoperability; and the WiFi Project Group, co-chaired by Facebook and Deutsche Telekom with a remit of fostering collaboration, exploration, and standardisation in the field of WiFi connectivity.

“We are encouraged by the energy of MWC and the opportunity to see many members of the TIP community,” adds Zani. “We look forward to the coming year and the collective work of designing and deploying the next generation of telecom infrastructure.”
