Verizon, Responder Corp Launch 5G First Responder Lab Programme

"First responders should have the absolute best, most effective technologies available to them as they protect our communities and respond to emergencies large and small," explains Verizon's Toby Redshaw of the company's Washington DC 5G lab project.

Verizon has announced the launch of a new technology incubator designed to promote the development of applications and systems that can assist first responders using 5G cellular networking: the Verizon 5G First Responder Lab.

“First responders should have the absolute best, most effective technologies available to them as they protect our communities and respond to emergencies large and small,” explains Toby Redshaw, Verizon senior vice president of strategy, innovation and product development, of the company’s inspiration. “Our 5G First Responder Lab will give technology innovators the opportunity to develop applications and use cases that leverage the unique capabilities of 5G, and to bring those solutions to market more quickly.”

“As Verizon deploys 5G, it is critical that we look beyond the launch for consumers and consider how users in public safety can leverage this revolutionary technology,” adds Nick Nilan, director of public sector product strategy for Verizon. “5G will enable technology for first responders that hasn’t been imagined yet, and this 5G First Responder Lab will help lead the creation of life-saving innovations.”

The lab is to be operated in partnership with Responder Corp, which runs the existing ResponderXLabs innovation programmes and Responder Ventures capital investment arm. “Responder Corp was founded on the basic principle that first responders deserve access to the best technology,” explains Nathanial Wish, co-founder and chief executive of Responder Corp. “Partnering with Verizon to launch the 5G First Responder Lab is a huge step forward for the industry in delivering on that vision. Verizon’s 5G network has the potential to enable some of the most promising and beneficial technologies we’ve come across. The Lab is our commitment to ensuring those fully enabled solutions are delivered to first responders across the country.”

The 5G First Responder Lab is located at Verizon’s Washington DC 5G DC Lab at Alley, and is to bring together 15 innovators across three cohorts to develop new public safety solutions. Each five-member cohort will be given three month access to the lab and its 5G test network, while also collaborating with both Verizon and Responder Corp on everything from testing and measurement to developing go-to-market strategies.

Applications can be made through the official website, with the first cohort closing at the end of the year.
