Sam Armani, mimik technology VP, Details the Need for a “New Cloud” Model
Sam Armani, vice president of business development at mimik technology, has issued a call for "a new cloud," highlighting the explosive growth of connected smart devices and calling for "a new architecture for applications that changes the fixed, hierarchical client/server model."
In a presentation uploaded to the company's YouTube channel, Sam Armani explains the problem: "Connected smart devices are growing explosively and generating massive amounts of data at an accelerating pace. There is not enough Internet bandwidth or computing resources in centralised data centres to process this new data coming from the edge.
"We need a new architecture for applications that changes the fixed, hierarchical client/server model," Armani continues. "We need to build a larger, faster cloud where billions of devices at the edge can participate as either clients or servers, and provide services directly for one another.
"We need the edge cloud."
Late last year mimik technology partnered with Lime Microsystems to bring the company's edge cloud platform and software development kit (SDK) to the LimeNET ecosystem. The LimeNET Access app, built with the mimik SDK and made available through the LimeNET App Store as a 'snap' package, demonstrates the power of the edge cloud paradigm: installed on a LimeNET CrowdCell small-cell network-in-a-box, LimeNET Access allows connected handsets to share documents, video, and other media at the edge of the network without needing to transfer data to and from a remote data centre with finite bandwidth.
