Osmocom Project Updates Cellular Network Infrastructure Stack, Improves LimeSDR Support

"Those new tagged/released versions contain four months of work since the previous versions released during April 2019," explains project maintainer Harald Welte. "The primary focus was on bug-fixing and stabilisation as well as some major new features, such as inter-MSC-handover support in osmo-msc."

Osmocom project maintainer Harald Welte has announced the latest Cellular Network Infrastructure (CNI) software stack releases, bringing with it support for the Cell Broadcast Service protocol (CBSP), TRXDv1 support, and improve compatibility with Lime Microsystems’ LimeSDR family of software defined radios.

“The Osmocom project has released new version of the CNI (Cellular Network Infrastructure) software, including OsmoTRX, OsmoBTS, OsmoBSC, OsmoMGW, OsmoMSC, OsmoHLR, OsmoSGSN, OsmoGGSN,” Welte writes in the release announcement. “Those new tagged/released versions contain four months of work since the previous versions released during April 2019. The primary focus was on bug-fixing and stabilisation as well as some major new features, such as inter-MSC-handover support in osmo-msc.”

Among the new features added in the latest release are support for the Cell Broadcast Service Protocol (CBSP) in libosmogsm, support for the TRXDv1 protocol in OsmoTRX, better conformance with the Abis OML protocol in OsmoBTS, full Cell Broadcast Channel (CBCH) support, and numerous enhancements for robustness and stability.

For those using the Osmocom CNI stack with the LimeSDR family of software defined radios, including the LimeNET range of all-in-one combined general-purpose processing (GPP) and SDR systems, these latest releases improve handling of signal drop-outs along with adding automatic detection of SDR model and device-specific gain settings to speed configuration.
